FAQ
What is a Clinical Psychologist?
A clinical psychologist works with individuals who experience a range of mental illness, behavioural, emotional or physical health problems. They aim to reduce psychological distress and enhance the promotion of psychological well-being. Clinical Psychology helps individuals to make sense of ‘their story’ and supports them to develop coping skills to move forward.
Clinical Psychologists have completed specialised training at doctoral level in the assessment, diagnosis, formulation and psychological treatment of mental illness and psychological difficulties. Clinical psychologists are also trained in research methods and work in accordance with guidelines set out by professional bodies (such as the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence), which means that treatment is evidence based and individually tailored. Clinical psychologist are bound by the Professional Code of Ethics, as laid down by the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). This protects an individual’s right to confidential and unbiased treatment.
